About Academic Affairs

Working with the academic affairs team, the senior vice provost for academic affairs provides leadership and guidance for academic units to enable their success in supporting the academic mission of the university. The team also helps units to understand and comply with state and national standards. Academic affairs recognizes that the success of our academic units is critical in achieving KU’s aspiration to be recognized as a top-tier public international research university. In order to do this, academic affairs:

  • Oversees the implementation of Bold Aspirations, KU’s strategic plan, with the guidance of an implementation team. Provides direction for the implementation of strategies that closely align with academic affairs
  • Serves on the central leadership team, comprised of the provost and vice provosts, which provides university direction and oversight
  • Partners with the academic deans to facilitate communication and interaction with the Office of the Provost
  • Provides leadership for the unit directors of the Center for Online and Distance Learning, Graduate Studies, Institutional Compliance, International Programs, the Reserve Officers Training Corps, Student Affairs, and Undergraduate Studies to help shape the goals, mission, and vision of the units and ensure they are aligned with KU’s goals, mission, and vision
  • Develops, oversees, and revises academic policy
  • Assists in the development and administration of various policies and budgets affecting the entire campus

The senior vice provost for academic affairs is the chief liaison to the Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) for matters related to academic affairs. The chief liaison:

  • Builds relationships and collaborates with academic partners across KBOR institutions
  • Works with the Office of Institutional Research and Planning to develop and track university performance indicators, establish goals, and provide reports to the Kansas Board of Regents
  • Oversees academic program approval and review for KBOR, including community college articulation agreements, transfer of credit, and out-of-district course approvals
  • Develops successful assessment mechanisms to guide accreditation reports
