New Academic Program Proposals

Requests for all new academic programs (degrees, majors, concentrations, certificates, minors, dual degrees, joint degrees) go through a comprehensive review process.  All new academic programs are required to be reviewed and approved at the academic unit/department and school/College/unit level, using appropriate governance mechanisms specific to that unit/department and school/College/unit.  At the campus level, all new academic program proposals are reviewed by the Academic Program Coordinating Committee before being submitted to the Provost. The Chancellor has delegated approval authority to the Provost who serves as the Chief Academic Officer. After the Provost’s approval, new programs are forwarded to the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and Kansas Board of Regents for action as outlined in each entity’s policies. The approval process ensures that proposed programs and actions are aligned with the University’s mission and strategic plan as well as ensuring that appropriate resources are available to support and sustain new programs. Consult the Handbook for Approval and Change Processes for Academic Programs, Curricula, and Academic Units.
